What is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is an HVAC solution that has the capability to both heat and cool your home. There are two types: air source and geothermal (ground source). Air source heat pumps move heat from one place to another, absorbing heat energy from the outside air (even when it’s cold) to warm your home and pulling heat out of the indoor air to cool it. Geothermal heat pumps function the same way except they transfer the heat between the home and the ground which has a more constant temperature. A standout feature of a heat pump is that it can heat your home at drastically higher efficiency levels than the typical furnace, with the caveat that at lower temperatures it becomes difficult for a heat pump to pull heat out of the air and typically needs another system to augment its heating power. How efficient is a Heat Pump?
Heat pumps have a range of efficiency levels which are represented by SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) for the cooling aspect and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) for the heating aspect. SEER is calculated by taking the cooling output for a typical cooling season and dividing it by the total electrical input for the same time frame. The higher the SEER the more efficient the system is. HSPF is calculated by taking the heating output for a typical heating season and dividing it by the electrical input for the same time frame, and like SEER the higher the HSPF the more efficient the system. What is Effective SEER/HSPF?
All heat pumps have a SEER & HSPF rating which is certified by AHRI (Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute). This allows consumers to compare the efficiency ratings of different products. The Solar HVAC Heat Pump is an innovative system that combines traditional heat pump technology with a patented Solar Thermal Collector that captures renewable energy for use instead of electricity from the grid. Because AHRI does not test and certify solar technologies the Solar HVAC Heat Pump is tested and certified by two separate bodies: AHRI for the bottom traditional heat pump portion of the system, and the ICC-SRCC (Solar Rating & Certification Corporation) for the upper Solar Thermal Collector portion of the system.
